I get comments. Mostly they’re spam (you’ll notice a new Spam Karma 2 footer showing how many have been eaten.)

But sometimes I get surprising comments.

Remember my post about Aspray a couple of months back? Well, it’s now got an interesting comment on it, a snippet:

We at Aspray were very distressed to read the article ‘Why Aspray sucks’ and especially concerned for the person who had experienced such awful service from the company.

It is both unacceptable and inexcusable that they should be treated in such a manner and as the Marketing Manager based at the Head Office I can only apologise and reassure this person that we will be looking seriously into this matter.

You can read the full thing here. They also contacted me personally saying more-or-less the same thing. I should find out the results of the investigation and I’ll try and post what I can in the forthcoming bathroom saga wrap-up post.

But first, kudos to them. For either having the sense to search the internet for references to themselves or, if they were tipped off, for handling it the way they did. Their response is all someone could hope for, no cease-and-desist, no request to remove the content, just a well thought-out response that doesn’t attempt to avoid or deny the reality of my experience and it includes a promise to investigate further.

There are multi-national companies that could learn from that level of customer service and marketing expertise. Just the few minutes that it took to make contact with me has dramatically shifted my opinion of Aspray.

Well done.

Normality Returns?

Filed under: Life — SpaceDog @ 11:03 am

And relax.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe officially ended on Monday. The International Festival still has a bit less than a week to run and there’s various other bits and bobs going on but in general the city should return to normal. Monday was noticeably quieter than mid-week last week.

And so should my life, my last planned show (Frank Skinner) was on Monday night, he was excellent. Over the last three weeks, I’ll have seen seventeen shows, run several poker nights, attended a few nights out and I spent last Sunday at a wedding. All of which has been great fun but it’s been exhausting.

It’s been the usual mix of good, bad and indifferent but I have seen some excellent stuff. I’ve really enjoyed the shows I’ve seen in the Spiegeltent this year, and I’ve quite enjoyed their beer garden. So much so that I’m considering moving my traditional start-of-festival session there next year although it’s possibly the most expensive bar at any venue.

To make matters more interesting work has started on my bathroom, although it’s stalled again for various reasons. That means I have all the little joys of having work done like having to keep a torch by the bathroom because there’s no electricity in there, or of having a fine layer of dust covering everything and — possibly the worst part — of getting up extra early to get ready so I can let the builders in. It could be worse, at least I have running water. I look forward to being able to post that everything is finished and sorted. But considering I’ve just dismissed the current bunch of builders I guess we’ll see …

And now it’s time to turn my attention to planning the details of my next holiday. Currently I know I’ll be in Los Angeles in just under two months time, Las Vegas a month later and Mexico in between the two. Sounds like fun.

Hopefully more posts next month than I managed this month, but I’ve said that before.

But not wiser

Filed under: Life — SpaceDog @ 4:20 pm

If I’d have become wiser with age then I’d know that spending twelve hours drinking in the sunshine will not do wonders for your head the following morning.

I’d also have known not to try the same thing again (with less sunshine and more roast lamb) the next day. Not if I wanted work today to be a pleasant experience.

I’d also have been sensible enough not to leave my wallet in a taxi.

But that’s how it goes.

It was an excellent weekend even with the hangovers and lack of wallet. And I least I didn’t lose my wallet at a point where it was full of tickets as it had been the night before.

My recollection of the shows is a bit vague so nothing more than a thumbs up for Kirsten O’Brien — who is worth seeing if you’re around at the right time. And a thumbs down for Nick Doody who never really caught my attention.

Off to a few more tonight, we’ll see how those go.

Older

Today marks the start of my 33rd year on the planet (making me 32 to save you thinking it through). You might expect that to have some effect on me, but no. I’ve pretty much ignored the relentlessly ticking clock of age since my mid-twenties. When people ask how old I am my mind thinks “around 24” while my brain desperately tries to work out what the right answer is.

Still, it’s a good excuse for a piss up. So I’m off to see what’s on at the festival.

Just to reassure you that being a year older hasn’t changed me, here’s a bonus edfringe.com rant. From the edfringe.com terms and conditions here:

Before providing a link to our site you must seek our permission. To do this, email Louise with details of the URL to which you wish to link and the URL of the page on which you will be displaying the link. We do not permit the display of our web pages in any html frame unless we have expressly authorised this.

What. The. Fuck?

You idiots. You’re supposed to be making it easier for people to link to your site, you want more visitors, even if the site is worse than last year.

Listen edfringe.com here’s a online-sales basic principal for you: You want to encourage links. As Yoda might say “links lead to traffic, traffic leads to ticket sales and ticket sales lead to profit”.

Even ignoring the monumental stupidity, and the complete unenforceability, of that clause it’s just not how the world wide web works. World wide web. It’s a web. With links. You twats.

Fortunately people either don’t know about the clause (I didn’t until festbitch bitched about it) or everyone ignores it. Or maybe everyone else already e-mailed and asked permission.

But I didn’t. Fuck ’em.

I will monitor my mailboxes, both real and virtual, with glee whilst awaiting my cease-and-desist letter.

Busy …

I’ve been busy, hence the lack of posts. Really, it’s not just laziness this time. Here’s a bit of a catch up post to fill in the gap. So, what have I been doing? Well, I’ve been …

Playing Poker. Last time I mentioned The Nuts Poker League I was just a player. Now, somehow, I’m organising a game. Every Tuesday night I run a poker night in the Persevere. It’s a bit more difficult than I expected but I think I’m on top of it now. Come along if you’re in Edinburgh on a Tuesday night — it’s a fun night out. Most of the time.

Going to the Cinema. I’ve seen a couple of films. Die Hard 4.0 is lots of fun if you don’t take it too seriously. McClane takes enough punishment to kill a normal person within the first twenty minutes of the movie, but by the time he’s destroyed his first helicopter you stop caring. They stretch it a bit towards the end (you’ll know what I’m talking about when you see it) but I liked the final few minutes a lot, it contrasted nicely with all the over the top stuff that proceeded it. Go see it.
I liked Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix less, the last half an hour are great but the rest of the film seemed a bit rushed and disjointed. It seems like they were just going through ticking off the important plot points in order to get to the end. It it was always going to be a difficult book to turn into a film and my view appears to the minority, so maybe it caught me on a bad day. Worth seeing anyway, but I’d wait for the DVD if you haven’t seen it already.

Going to the Zoo. Eh, not much to say. I went to Edinburgh Zoo. It’s a zoo, and it’s quite difficult to shake the “animals in concrete cages” vibe even though they’re trying very hard to be a more modern attraction. Still an interesting place to go and visit, well worth a day trip. But I preferred the Highland Wildlife Park which is run by the same people and has a much less zoo-y feel to it.

Sorting out the Festival. Less than two weeks until the start of all the various Edinburgh festivals. I’ve picked up tickets to a few things but I’m mostly going with my traditional plan of sitting around one of the big venues drinking and picking shows at, more-or-less, random.

Booking a Holiday. I’ve still got around four weeks worth of holidays to take from work so I should find something to do. Last year it was Russia on a train. This year it’s pretty much Mexico on a bus. I’m going to a wedding in Mexico City at the beginning of November so I’ve booked to a little tour of Central America and I’ve sorted a return flight out to Los Angeles. I think I’ll dot around the big cities on the western side of the USA before and after the Mexico part. It’s vague plan but it’s still a plan. Yay. The only problem is it’s still three months away.

And that’s what I’ve done. With more birthdays, weddings, movies, poker and festival stuff, to come I’m going to continue being busy for the next few weeks.

So today I’m going to relax, lie on the couch, drink beer, watch the Grand Prix and then read some more of the new Harry Potter book.

Not a bad plan for a Sunday.

Broken …

I’ve spent the entire weekend sitting around drinking and playing computer games.

It was good fun, but it has broken me.

I feel like someone has attacked me with a baseball bat.

I’m having difficulty avoiding passing out at my desk.

Every time I close my eyes I see flashes of game graphics.

Most worryingly I can hear the battle music from Supreme Commander playing inside my head.

It’s a little disturbing.

How’s my new years resolution coming along …

People Visited: 18 (4) [June: 18/4]
Places Visited: 8 (2) [June: 8/2]
Countries Visited: 6 (2) [June: 6/2]

No movement at all. A fairly lazy month. And I’m saving all my days off for a holiday later this year so I’m unlikely to get abroad again until then. I did find the time to join Facebook which might inspire me to catch up with a few people.

See the January post for the details and the rules.

Taking Liberties

I watched Taking Liberties last week — the official site says:

Right to Protest, Right to Freedom of Speech. Right to Privacy. Right not to be detained without charge, Innocent Until Proven Guilty. Prohibition from Torture. TAKING LIBERTIES will reveal how these six central pillars of liberty have been systematically destroyed by New Labour, and the freedoms of the British people stolen from under their noses amidst a climate of fear created by the media and government itself.

Which is pretty much what it does. It’s a film made up of separate stories, all true, highlighting the erosion of our civil liberties. A film like this could have been a disjointed affair but it’s actually structured in a sensible way that makes it hold together very well as a film. Of course it has a bit of an agenda but the examples they show are still disturbing enough even if they’ve been cherry picked to show the extremes. I’d have liked to see more of the government trying to justify themselves, mostly it’s stock footage and ‘ambush’ interviews, but I guess there wasn’t much chance of getting ol’ Tony to do a sit down interview for a film like this.

All in all it’s an excellent film and one that you really should see, just to see some of the stuff that goes on in the UK.

And last week lots of people did see it, the cinema was quite busy. And noisy. I think because it was a documentary people thought that they could add their own commentary.

Look, I know it’s a film about free speech but shut up! Or at least attempt to whisper your thoughts to your friends. You know, use your inside voice. Don’t bray loudly that about which protesters you’ve met and which fields you’ve camped in.

We might still have to time to save our civil liberties but I fear that old fashioned Great British good manners are beyond help.

Bonus film news, everyone and their dog has already linked to it but just it case you’ve not seen the trailer here’s your runaway summer blockbuster: The Simpsons Movie.

Why Aspray sucks …

Filed under: Life — SpaceDog @ 5:27 pm

At the beginning of this year I resolved to do something about my bathroom.

For some reason it has a fake wooden ceiling — I had a sneaking suspicion that it might be hiding some dubious wiring that be the cause of the some lighting problems in the flat.

Anyroads, it was time for the fake ceiling to be removed, I may as well get rid of the water tank too and get the wiring all checked and fixed. So, that’s plumbing, wiring, joinery and probably tiling, painting and plastering too. Time to get a ‘all trades’ company to do this. I phoned three and arranged for them to come have a look.

Only Aspray actually bothered to turn up. I forget who the other two were.

When I pointed out some water damage on a wall the man from Aspray said that that was clearly caused by a leak and this was (at least partly) ‘an insurance job’. Excellent. He waffled on about getting the insurance company to cover all sort of things (tiling, painting, alternative accommodation etc) and said that they’ll “do it all for me”. Wonderful.

Or not.

That was on the 10th on January. Five months ago.

Since then they’ve managed to remove some of the fake ceiling to reveal a very obvious hole in the real ceiling.

And beside that they’ve achieved exactly sod all.

During this time they’ve rarely returned my phone calls, I typically had to call four or five times to get hold of someone. We did get as far as arranging a loss adjuster visit but I had to cancel it at the short notice — this seems to have annoyed them as after that it became impossible to get hold of anyone.

Eventually I wrote to them and a new guy got back to me saying that the dude handling my claim was off work and that “someone should have informed me of this”. Ya think? But not to worry he’d sort it all out.

After two weeks with no contact I write to them again to remind them.

After two more weeks with still no contact. I start phoning again. I leave messages which are never returned.

After a week of this I happen to phone on a bank holiday, and no one is in the office so I’m forwarded to the mobile of the guy originally handling the case. He’s still off work. But he’ll get in touch with new guy and get it sorted. He’ll make sure I’m called back.

After a couple of days I phone again, explain that no one is returning my calls and am given the mobile number of the new guy. It doesn’t work. It’s missing a digit. I call back and explain this. They don’t have another number so I’m promised a call back.

After a day I call again and explain. They give me same mobile number again, nice of them to note not to give out that number. I explain this and they promise a call back.

After a day I call again and ask for an e-mail address and I send an e-mail to both the contact address and the main office address giving them five days to respond. I get an e-mail bounce from the address I was given but the office one goes through.

After five days I give up (you can see I’m fairly patient) and I tell my insurance company they’re not working for me. I send Aspray a letter informing them they’ve no longer working for me. That’s that.

Five months wasted. At the time I assumed they were just incompetent, overworked and badly organised. Writing this I’m wondering if the fake number and bad e-mail were part of a deliberate ploy to avoid customers they don’t want to deal with? Regardless of whether they’re deeply inept or malicious I would never ever use them and I would strongly recommend against anyone else using them. Which is pretty much what this entry does, feel free to pass it along to those who might need to know.

I wouldn’t hold them in such contempt if they’ve just admitted at any point (even right at the end) that they couldn’t do the work and that I’d need to find someone else. All they needed to do was to return any of my calls, letters or e-mails over the last five months.

But they didn’t.

That, my friends, is why Aspray Suck!

Green Ears

If you live in Edinburgh you may have noticed little green ear-shaped signs attached to lampposts around the Leith area. There’s one at the bottom of Leith Walk, outside the Mermaid chip shop, above the sign talking about the drinking ban in the area.

If you’re like me you’ve probably thought “A green ear, that’s a bit odd, I must find out what that’s about” and then promptly forgot about it once you’re ten feet further down the road. But fate has intervened and I found the answer while idly surfing in an effort to avoid work.

The answer, it seems, is [murmur]:

[murmur] is an audio documentary project that collects and presents stories set in specific locations in Edinburgh (in this instance, throughout the area of Leith), as told by the residents of Edinburgh themselves. Ear-shaped [murmur] signs bearing a telephone number and location code mark the places where stories are available for listening. Use the map to find the story locations, and then use your mobile to call the number, enter the location code, and listen to [murmur] stories while you explore the space where the stories took place.

and just in case you think there’s some sort of premium phone rate scam going on:

Alternatively, you may also listen to the stories on this website by clicking the red dots on the map.

Interesting idea, I’ve listened (via the web) to the foot of Leith Walk one and it’s someone reminiscing about their childhood and what the area was like. Interesting, but not terribly ground breaking. I’m surprised they haven’t gone all Web 2.0 and allowed people to upload their own anecdotes but I guess they’re it’s more an art project than a web doodah.

Still it’s worth listening to if you don’t know much of the history of the area. And if you were confused by the green ears, now you know.
