WTF

Filed under: Life — SpaceDog @ 9:11 pm

From the “thinking well outside the box” file. Or maybe not far enough outside …

University’s in the states are increasingly offering alumni burial plots or vaults for urns on campus.

“People look back on their college years and say, ‘Those were the best days of my life,’ ” Malkoff said. “Why not spend eternity there?”

Do they? Hell, I enjoyed Uni as much as the next person but I don’t really want to be buried there.

Some people spend half their life at the same job, maybe employers should start offering plots. Or putting urns with the ashes of past managers in the canteen. Although it’s just going to eventually lead to someone trying to make coffee with them.

Maybe pubs could get in on it, finding a permanent spot for their regulars after they’ve supped their last.

Everyone could start doing it, there might be a bidding war for really sought after spots.

Still, it’s making the universities some money and if people want to spend their cash on it I can’t see anything wrong with. Maybe I’m just a bit peeved I didn’t think of it first.

Distractions …

Filed under: Life — SpaceDog @ 9:54 pm

You’d think the lack of posts would mean I’ve been busy … but no, just lazy and easily distracted.

Of course that’s only going to get worse as now Big Brother is back on our screens. This year they’ve filled the house (initally at least) with just women, there’s quite a lot of girly screaming going at the moment, it could get quite grating. It actually seems a nice mix of people this year so it might be quite watchable but we’ll have to see what happens when they start sending the men in.

I’ve also been playing a fair bit of poker recently, I’m going to give a quick plug to The Nuts Poker League which is a pub poker league. It’s free to enter and I was quite worried about the sort of people it’d attract but it gets quite a good crowd and it’s actually good fun. If you’ve got a game near you then it’s worth checking out.

It did strike me the other day that poker might be the bingo of my generation. Perhaps in the future the youngsters will be doing something different and scoffing that their parents are “off to the poker again”.

… still not great. The Moscow trip pretty much wiped out my free time this month. But the point of doing these posts is to highlight (mostly to myself) how I’m doing and to inspire me to do better in the upcoming months.

Short Notice

For the last few months my boss has been toying with the idea of sending me to a inter-company testing thing, basically a lot of companies get together and check that their software can all talk to each other like it should. I’ve been to one before and it was quite an interesting and fun diversion, but I’d pretty much written off all hope of going to this one as there weren’t a lot of other companies going and the higher-ups didn’t sound convinced.

However, at the last minute, they’ve decided that I should go, we may as well take the chance to find problems in a friendly setting like this rather than have them crop up in the middle of a demo in front of a real customer.

So the upside is that I’m going to Moscow in 11 days, I’ll get a bit of a break from the normal routine of work, I’ll get to meet some new people, and I’ll get a weekend in Moscow after it’s all over.

The downside is that I’m going to Moscow in 11 days. Eeek. That’s going to be cutting it a little close for comfort. That means that, as well as getting the software running on the (slightly flaky) team laptop, I’ve got to sort out accommodation, transport and a visa. Most of that I can do, but it’s going to be really tight to get the required paperwork together for a business visa, particularly with Easter this weekend.

Ah well, that’s what I get for thinking to myself that work had been getting a bit dull lately.

Product Of The Year

Watching TV earlier this week I was appalled by an advert for the Tassimo coffee maker, sorry, coffee system. I’m not annoyed by the stupid name, the annoyingly stereotyped adverts, or the fact that the machine is just an attempt to tie people to one manufacturer by combining the freely available coffee, milk, and whatnot in one machine-specific proprietary one-use over-priced cartridge. That’s fine, I’m happy not buying one. I’m sure it fills a niche.

No, what annoyed me is that apparently the Tassimo is Product of the Year, at least in the field of drinks equipment.

Now, I’m not annoyed by the fact that it’s a pretty lofty claim for a kichen gadget that’s not even very original in it’s field, nor am I annoyed that Cillit Bang is nowhere to be found in the cleaning products section.

I’m not even annoyed by the fact that the Product of the Year badge is a badly disguised marketing gimmick where you pay for consideration by the public (well, the 12 thousand or so who can be arsed to return the form) and then pay if you win.

No, the thing that really tweaked me off was that it’s Product of the Year 2007. Eh, I had to check the calendar to make sure I hadn’t slept for nine months.

It’s a bit premature to be handing out the 2007 awards, no? How’s your typical wacky inventor going to feel when, after perfecting a machine that converts household waste into the delicious beverage of your choice, he realises he’s playing second fiddle to a glorified vending machine?

Cheeky fuckers.

I urge everyone to brandish their biros and insert the phrase ‘the first quarter of’ into the logo wherever they may see it.

(Probably best not to do it if it’s you’re seeing it on a website or a TV advert, you’re just going to get ink on your screen).

Progress …

Progress time again:

People Visited: 11 (2) [Jan: 5/1]
Places Visited: 5 (2) [Jan: 2/1]
Countries Visited: 5 (2) [Jan: 2/1]

Again the numbers in brackets are ‘new’ people/places/countries (see the rules below). February has been a nice busy month a lot of travelling and visiting people, so much that I’m exhausted and poor at the moment. It’s a great start to my resolution but it’s going to drop off now in March and April.

The rules (to keep me honest).
For places and countries the numbers are the number of unique places/countries I’ve been so far this year. The number in brackets indicates the places/countries I’ve never been before. Passing through somewhere due to connecting flights or transfers doesn’t count. For people it’s the number of people I’ve travelled to visit (counting people in Edinburgh only if I make the effort to visit their home). The number in brackets are people I didn’t visit last year and/or would have been unlikely to visit this year if I hadn’t made a resolution to do so. Partners and family members don’t count extra unless I know them separately and “accidents” don’t count, I have to be deliberately going to see the person.

Bad Idea in Berlin

Pub Crawl?

Free Beer?

Free Vodka Shots All Night?

With my reputation?

None of that is that a bad idea, in fact I think the New Berlin Pub Crawl is a fantastic idea, good value and great fun.

The bad idea was that Absinthe. After which it’s all a bit … hazy … dark …

Best in Class

It’s been a fun weekend so far, dotting around London, meeting up with friends, eating and drinking. Emphasis on the drinking.

I’ve discovered a couple of gems, first possibly the best club in London, Feeling Gloomy, from the site:

The UKs only club night that brings you the saddest, most melancholy music known to man.

Which is probably not the best advert for a club but it works remarkably well, lots of fun music with melancholy as a general theme and a mixed crowd that seemed to be really enjoying themselves. Well worth checking out, even if it does have an annoying dude taking photos for the website. Yes, you can find us in the set from last Saturday.

The second gem was Hot Fuzz which was fantastic, so much so that I almost don’t mind forking out £13 for the privilege of seeing it in a swanky Leicester Square cinema. The film is pretty much what every action comedy should aim for, they’ve well and truly raised the bar I’ll be interested to see what they do to top it.

Off to attempt to find something cultured to do for the afternoon, and tomorrow onward to Berlin.
