Flying High

Filed under: Life — SpaceDog @ 10:52 pm

Hmmm, another weekend with no posts. I blame the heat. Next weekend will be no different as I’m off to T in the Park. Yay.

I got a little preview of the T in the Park site at the weekend, it was surprisingly unfinished, only a few tents up and no sign of the main stage. I guess it doesn’t take them long to put all the necessary bits and bobs together. Find out how I got that picture after the jump.

I took the picture during the highlight of my weekend: spending an hour in a little two seat airplane thanks to Tayside Aviation and the various people that bought me the flight for my birthday last year. Thanks guys and gals!

The flight itself was interesting, I quite enjoy flying (commercially) even though I tend to dislike heights but it’s a lot different in a small plane were you can gaze straight down out of the side windows at the ground below. I was a bit concerned at the start of the flight that I’d spend the rest of the hour worrying that we were going to plunge out of the sky. I got used to it and the only time I was bothered was when I was given the chance to take control — then there was just the vague possibility I was gonna fly us into a hill, or another plane, or just roll us and stall the engines somehow.

The whole ‘learning to fly’ is becoming more popular, there’s a relatively cheap option with the National Private Pilots License. I say relatively cheap, it’s still almost four grand and there’s no guarantee you’d pass first time.

I’ve always fancied learning to fly, and I enjoyed being up there but I’m not sure just how much experience it would take for me to be comfortable flying on my own. And there’s a lot of other things I could do if I was going to start throwing around that sort of money …
